The Ballinrobe cross is found in County May. Ballinrobe is near Lough Mask, a lake, which s wide enough to produce choppy waves in rough weather. Nearby is the ruins of Inishmanina Abbey, a 13th century Augustinian house, originally founded by St. Connan in the 6th century. Also nearby is Cong Abbey which was founded in about 1120 by Turlough O’Connor, High King of Ireland, on the site of a 6th century church associated with St. Feichin. Cross is 10″ x 5″.
This lovely cross design was found near Ballyshannon. Although several centuries old, it is not one of the ancient high cross monuments of Ireland. At the center is the sacred heart of Jesus with rays of light surrounding it. The outer ring is thought to represent heaven. Cross is 6.5″ x 4.25″
This cross design was developed and inspired by a cross at the present-day ruins. The shamrocks, of course, are a symbol of Ireland and seem to represent “everything Irish”. The heart and rays streaming from it represent Christ, the Light of the World. The small bosses of spirals represent spiritual growth. Along the sides of the shaft we have added a well-known Irish blessing. “May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks.” Cross is 8.5″ x 4.25″.
