The Celtic Cross

Stories vary on the ancient cross. Many predate Christianity, yet in Irish legend, St. Patrick is credited with introducing the first Celtic cross. The Celts told him of the sacred stone they worshipped representing the moon goddess. St. Patrick made the mark of Latin cross through the circle and blessed the stone, creating the first Celtic Cross

Others believe that it was also known as the Sun Cross or Sun Wheel and was a symbol of Odin, the Norse god. Modern interpretations view the circular portion as a symbol of eternal life, with the number 4 – the arms of the cross represent north-south-east-west, or fire-earth-air-water, or mind-body-soul-heart.

crosses McHarp Slane Abbey Irish Cross $34.99
    Add to Wishlist

This cross design was developed and inspired by a cross at the present-day ruins. The shamrocks, of course, are a symbol of Ireland and seem to represent “everything Irish”. The heart and rays streaming from it represent Christ, the Light of the World. The small bosses of spirals represent spiritual growth. Along the sides of the shaft we have added a well-known Irish blessing. “May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks.” Cross is 8.5″ x 4.25″.
