Galway Crystal has long been one of the world’s best known and loved brands of traditionally crafted crystal. Nestled in the heart of the West of Ireland, on the shores of Galway Bay, Galway Crystal is steeped in the rich and diverse heritage of this unique hinterland. Our inspiration comes from the sheer beauty of the surrounding countryside Connemara, Galway Bay and Lough Corrib and from the wealth of history and folklore which is synonymous with Galway, the famous City of Tribes.
A Celtic Tradition has it that every couple should receive a bell as a wedding gift. The bell is placed in the newlywed’s home. When a disagreement takes place, one of the couple rings the bell to end the discord and declare a truce without an admission of fault.
The Ballinrobe cross is found in County May. Ballinrobe is near Lough Mask, a lake, which s wide enough to produce choppy waves in rough weather. Nearby is the ruins of Inishmanina Abbey, a 13th century Augustinian house, originally founded by St. Connan in the 6th century. Also nearby is Cong Abbey which was founded in about 1120 by Turlough O’Connor, High King of Ireland, on the site of a 6th century church associated with St. Feichin. Cross is 10″ x 5″.
This lovely cross design was found near Ballyshannon. Although several centuries old, it is not one of the ancient high cross monuments of Ireland. At the center is the sacred heart of Jesus with rays of light surrounding it. The outer ring is thought to represent heaven. Cross is 6.5″ x 4.25″
Carved into the face of the cross is an Irish harp and scores of shamrocks. Both have become famous symbols of Ireland. The harp figures into many of the old Irish myths. The shamrock is from a legend about St. Patrick that says he used a shamrock with its three leaves to explain the Trinity, the triple nature of God. Cross is 14″x 6″.
This cross design was developed and inspired by a cross at the present-day ruins. The shamrocks, of course, are a symbol of Ireland and seem to represent “everything Irish”. The heart and rays streaming from it represent Christ, the Light of the World. The small bosses of spirals represent spiritual growth. Along the sides of the shaft we have added a well-known Irish blessing. “May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks.” Cross is 8.5″ x 4.25″.
